For its 2025 extra_muros exhibition exchange, The Balcony is collaborating with Non-Étoile, a large Paris-based artist collective and project space. From September 25th to October 9th, The Balcony brings Tompouce meets Madeleine to Paris.
The exhibition title references traditional Dutch and French desserts, as well as the folklore characters associated with them — Tom Pouce (Tom Thumb), an adventurous child no bigger than his father’s thumb, and Madeleine, a figure whose identity as a baker has been claimed by various historical narratives.
The artists in this exhibition turn to storytelling and myth-making as processes tightly woven with what we make with our hands: hands that dream of pigments, puzzles, and syrup — echoing the sensory richness of childhood. The fantastical here appears as the other side of the handmade: that which softens under the warmth of a molding palm and unfurls, full of texture.
OPENING THU.SEP.25 19:00
ON VIEW until OCT.09 by appointment
At Non-Étoile, 20 rue Dieumegard, 93400 Saint-Ouen
The exhibition is part of The Balcony’s extramuros program, in which collaborations take place across Europe’s vast network of artist-run & presentation spaces. Occurring each year in September to inaugurate the new cultural season under the sign of collaboration and exchange, The Balcony has this year teamed up with a group of artists and curators originally from Paris.
The project is co-financed by the Dutch Embassy in France and Institut Français NL.
