Creative Reading Club
Thursday 7th December 2023Creative Reading Club explores some of the key themes running through the current exhibition on view: “The Promise of Ruin(s)' Chapter 6: General Morphology of Urbanism”, and the works by Denicolai & Provoost and Sean Charlton White. We read, imagine and think along together, on an exploration of the complex interplay between human agency and the natural world, using a playful approach to text and an introspection method for critical analysis and interpretation. It is addressed to reading lovers, adepts of critical thinking and all curious minds who wish to explore the links between text and visual arts!
For this first session of The Balcony Public Program, our starting point is a selection of texts from “Sane society” by Erich Fromm (1900-1980) - one of the most significant philosophical explorations of human nature, an insightful critique of modern society and the escape from freedom.
Using a playful approach to text, and through various interactive exercises, participants address the need for sustainable socio-ecological systems, and contextualize Fromm's ideas within the broader context of environmental ethics, connecting societal issues with individual psychological well-being.
