Our understanding of history often shapes our imagination of the future. Archeologies of the Not-Yet brings together retrospective and speculative practices, finding in their intersection a landscape of realistic possibility. Some of the works in the show reveal that under all past rubble, there is not a single, exquisitely lit historiographic memory but a muddled reflection of our own contemporary standing, while others offer an alternative understanding of utopia—not as a perfect future to predict, but as a political project that makes our present feel like the starting point for something still unfolding.

The exhibition is part of The Balcony’s extra_muros program, in which collaborations take place across Europe’s vast network of artist-run & presentation spaces. Taking place each year to inaugurate the new cultural season under the sign of collaboration and exchange, The Balcony has this year teamed up with a group of artists and curators from Bucharest.

Archeologies of the Not-Yet is supported by the Romanian public funding entity: AFCN (Administratia Fondului Cultural National / National Cultural Funding Administration)
