︎&#38;nbsp;Call for Volunteers&#38;nbsp;published Jan. 2026

CONTEXT
The Balcony is an artist-run space sustained by long-term commitment, mutual consideration, and respect for labour. Alongside the ongoing work of the artists running the space, we invite volunteers who wish to engage with the program in ways that feel meaningful to them.

Volunteers at The Balcony will contribute where their interests, availability, and skills - involvement is shaped together, limited in scope, and leaves room for exploration, learning, initiative, development, and creativity.
As we are a small team, we welcome all kind and generous supports, in a peer-to-peer approach: cultural workers helping each others. We also warmly encourage people with genuine interest and curiosity to reach out. No prior training or study in the arts is required, we value all inputs&#38;nbsp;:-)

TO APPLY, REGISTER VIA THIS LINK

The Balcony was co-founded by Arthur Cordier, Valentino Russo, and is curated together with Abril Cisneros Ramirez, and Mari Kolcheva. From 2023 until 2025 Ariane Toussaint occupied the position of Office Manager and Assistant Curator, as part of a part-time employment contract. The team jointly conceives, discusses and defines the curatorial, education and public program.

We hope to hear back from you!

Arthur, Valentino, Abril, and Mari

If you would like to make a donation and support our programme, feel welcome to reach out! We would be glad to include your contribution and mention in our future communication. We are open for business. Last but not least—some of the works exhibited and/or co-produced by The Balcony are available for sale. Send us an email!&#38;nbsp;Warm greetings.

	Since September 2021 The Balcony is located in the city center of The Hague. The ground floor location combines a project space and five working spaces for artists.&#38;nbsp;The Balcony curates exhibitions supporting the presentation of upcoming practices with a focus on alternative formats of display, long-term commitment to the development of artistic projects, with a discursive driven-approach.&#38;nbsp;

The initiative has previously been hosted in the vitrine of a violin store 2018–2020 as well as the basement of a former office space known as Susan Bites 2019–2021Starting 2023 The Balcony is curated by Arthur Cordier (BE), Valentino Russo (IT), Abril Cisneros (ES/MX), Mari Kolcheva (BG) and Ariane Toussaint (FR).

CollaborationsFrom the very beginning The Balcony has been eager to work together with artist-run spaces and institutions within The Netherlands and abroad. Through the years we have collaborated with spaces in Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Germany and Romania.Partnership
In the quest for a more professional and appropriate form of audience engagement, we can count on the technical support of SBAE (Stefan Bandalac Audio-visual Expertise), The Hague-based technical production company specialised in audio-visual services for the cultural sector. Since 2021, SBAE has provided The Balcony professional A/V equipment for exhibitions and video documentations, as well as technical consultancy.

Support
Stichting The Balcony is generally supported by Stroom Den Haag and the Mondriaan Fonds on a project-based funding. Recent support and partnerships include Gemeente Den Haag; International Visitors Programme of the Nieuwe Instituut with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Institut Français NL; and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in France; a.o.

Here, The Balcony presented artists whose practice
engaged with the vitrine, in relation to the public space and its 24/7 visibility.&#38;nbsp;

The intuition leading the space was to present non-The Hague
based artists - in priority, and to introduce their practice within the
cultural context of the city.

Arthur Cordier (Belgium) grew up on an island. Currently his practice entails that of a curator and artist working between The Netherlands and Belgium. With a background in communication studies and urban space, his practice often involves the study and tactical reassembly of commercial, production and advertising strategies, especially when these operate in urban contexts. The amplitude of his proposals allow him to work around the aesthetics and politics of bureaucracy, entrepreneurship, and efficiency, which at times results in self-reflective exercises traversing the economic conditions of being an artist.
In 2018, together with Valentino Russo, he co-founded The Balcony in The Hague, where he has co-curated a program tackling, among other themes, the paradoxes of creative labor, the framing of automation and the dynamics between consumption, excess and the role of the artist in a society driven by efficiency.
Arthur received a Master’s degree in Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in 2019. He has had solo exhibitions at IKOB Museum of Contemporary Art (Eupen), Hgtomi Rosa (The Hague), as well as group exhibitions at Galerie Maurits van de Laar (The Hague), TORCH Gallery (Amsterdam), Bregenz Biennale (Austria),&#38;nbsp;a.o. Alongside his role at The Balcony, Arthur contributes to Art Au Centre (Liège) as guest curator, and at Cas-co (Leuven) as artistic &#38;amp; residency coordinator.

Valentino Russo (Italy) is an artist and curator living and working in The Hague. An avid web surfer from his early years, Valentino’s artistic practice is informed by the spreadability and transformation of images in the internet age, the dynamics of self presentation in online spheres, and the vocabulary of social media. Working mainly with found footage and photography, he further addresses themes of media saturation, media literacy, attention economy, and the way these influence our understanding of truth. Mari Kolcheva (Bulgaria) is a visual artist based in The Hague with an inexhaustible interest in language and the stories that elude it. Her practice embraces curiosity and care to probe modes of knowledge that evolve on the unsteady frontier between science and magical thinking, and to explore the tension between natural body and body politic. Mari is working at The Balcony as a curator and head of the public program.
Mari received a Master’s degree in Photography &#38;amp; Society from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in 2020. Her work has been selected for Somfy Photography Award, and she was the recipient of Stipendium Dialoog by FOTODOK, Vrij Neerland and Stichting Dialoog. In 2020 she co-created Symposium on Visual Culture "Undisciplining Photography," in collaboration with Nederlands Fotomuseum (Rotterdam).
Previously, she devoted five years to developing a biotop for young Bulgarian artists using the medium of photography in Rubber Gallery—the first photography-dedicated space in Bulgaria, with venues in Sofia &#38;amp; Plovdiv, and she worked for the pan-European Cinema Education project CiNed, as well as for the International Sofia Film Festival as a part of Documentary Cinema panel.
In 2023, she was awarded the Kunstenaar START grant by the Mondriaan Fonds. Alongside her role at The Balcony, Mari is working together with the philosopher and educator Thomas Bragton on a long-term project that involves integrating Visual Culture education into high schools and professional school curricula, in collaboration with Johan de Witt Scholengroep and Waterlab voor de Toekomst, as she believes that learning how to see the world around us is of prime importance.

		<description>

The Balcony is excited to present its Public and Educational Program which closely accompanies the exhibitions. The activities are facilitated by visual artist and educator Mari Kolcheva.
The program is articulated around four main activities.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 1.The Creative Reading Club gives context to the current exhibition on view, exploring themes and topics behind the artist’s works and behind the main program. Creative Reading Club is a space that nurtures a community of care, collective thinking, and not only appreciates art’s role in socio-political landscape but actively engages in re-defining its narratives and agenda. The participants read, imagine and think, using a playful approach to text and an introspection method for analysis and interpretation.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2.
Peer-to-peer are structured feedback sessions address interdisciplinary artistic practices. They are made for artists and makers that need feedback on their current process, inspired by peer-to-peer education, through different games and exercises. The sessions are inspired by the DasArts Feedback method.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 3.
Artists Teach are workshops, during which the artist included in the current exhibition can share a specific skill, knowledge, or know-how to the audience. The aim is to deconstruct the idea that the only thing that an artist does is work, as an abstract and remote concept. But instead share one’s passion and dedication to a craft and field of interest. There is a copy-left (open sharing) approach that connects to the question: how to produce knowledge without extracting?

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 4.The fourth and final section are the Crossovers sessions. The Balcony invites two guests from different fields for a panel talk connected to the exhibition on view. It opens a conversation&#38;nbsp;between a guest with expertise in a different field together with the artist. Crossovers give space to contrasts. Each guest gives a presentation after each other, followed by questions by the audience.

		<description>As part of Slow Drift(s), Chapter 3
Special Screening The Balcony &#38;amp; Home Cinema SAT.FEB.14

SCREENING Curated by The Hague-based&#38;nbsp;collective Home Cinema
WITH FILMS BY Minne Kersten, Chema García Ibarra, and&#38;nbsp;Nguyễn Lê Hoàng Phúc

Collective Home Cinema curates a screening program responding to the current exhibition 'Slow Drift(s): Alonso Cedillo' on view at The Balcony. Screening hosted by Ruimtevaart.

SAT.FEB.14
Starts 20:00Register via Eventbrite linkPrice on donation.
Being human stands for some very simple things, even and especially at a time when the world is no longer what it used to be. Taking as a point of departure Alonso Cedillo’s research on conspiracy theory in a collapsing world, Home Cinema has selected three works that resonate with the human dimension of belief embedded in his practice. Rather than approaching conspiracy as a system of ideas or truths to be verified, these works attend to belief as a lived, emotional, and social experience: something shaped by fear, care, loneliness, hope, and the need to make sense of uncertainty.

The screening program unfolds as a conversation about survival, narrative, and the human struggle for meaning in an unstable world. It explores the psychology of belief and how we fill the gaps in logic with narrative, the tension between fact, fiction, fear, and distrust, how survival strategies are played out through narrative, belief as a coping mechanism, meaning-making, and community bonding.

PROGRAM

19.30—Doors open
20.00—Screening works by Minne Kersten,&#38;nbsp;Chema García Ibarra, and&#38;nbsp;Nguyễn Lê Hoàng Phúc
21.00—Chat/Q&#38;amp;A/Drinks

ABOUT
Minne Kersten is based in Paris and Amsterdam. She works with video, installation and painting, combining multiple techniques to construct a world where objects and scenes hold traces of facts and fiction. Her work considers the relationship between the real and the imagined, the ordinary and the ephemeral, and speculates on how we can recall events, memories and stories by tracing what is lost in what remains. In the act of construction, her work connects intimate themes such as mourning, loss and desire, and our collective domain of fiction, fables and symbol making.

Chema García Ibarra has written and directed “El ataque de los robots de Nebulosa-5” (2009), “Protopartículas” (2010), “Misterio” (2013), “Uranes” (2014), “La disco resplandece” (2016), "Leyenda dorada" (2019, co-directed with Ion de Sosa), and “Espíritu Sagrado” (2021)—all of them domestic science fiction films made without professional actors. His works have been selected for festivals such as the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, Locarno, Sundance, Berlinale, San Sebastián, and Mar del Plata. Among his more than two hundred awards are two honorable mentions at Sundance, a jury mention at San Sebastián, and the Vanguard and Genre competition prize at BAFICI.

Since 2015, he has taught the subject “Anti-filmmaking” in the documentary film degree program at the ECAM.

Nguyễn Lê Hoàng Phúc is a Saigon-based filmmaker and editor whose work blends humor, sincerity and genres to create playful yet introspective films. His recent films Bury Us in a Lone Desert (Tiger Short Competition, IFFR 2025) and The Premiere (2027) continue his bold, approachable exploration of cinematic form.

Home Cinema designs online streams and physical screenings, challenging storytelling formats. Through invitations and open calls, Home Cinema’s programs formally respond to the question: What can we see together when we cannot see each other?

In past editions, Home Cinema has collaborated with wysiwyg, Filmhuis Den Haag, Reneenee, Laak, Waag Society, Rialto UV, Heartqore, Sandberg Instituut, Mike Kokken, Julian Ross, WORKNOT!, Karina Zavidova.

Home Cinema was founded in 2020 by Carmen Dusmet Carrasco and Andrea González Garrán, designed and developed with Lukas Engelhardt.

This event is supported by Stroom Den Haag

For all French speakers! Join us for this Collective Writing Workshop!

Inspired by the surrealist game cadavre exquis, in which participants build up one after another different parts of a hidden drawing, this writing workshop attempts to reflect on the childhood period by creating a collective picture of it.

Traveling through different versions of self, personal memories, public and imaginary places and spaces, participants will react to each other’s contributions with tools of creative writing, fiction and playful exaggeration.

Atelier d'écriture collective animé par les artistes du collectif parisien Non-Etoile -
 Lina Chemlal, Azadeh Cohen-Mercury, Marine Feuillade, Léa Guillout, Julia Piccolo et Mélanie Yvon - autour de l’exposition ‘I’m a storyteller’ à The Balcony.

Inspiré du jeu surréaliste du cadavre exquis dans lequel les participants construisent tour à tour différentes parties d'un dessin caché, cet atelier d'écriture tente de réfléchir à la période de l'enfance en créant une image collective.
En voyageant à travers différentes identités fictives ou réelles, leurs souvenirs personnels, des lieux et des espaces publics ou imaginaires, les participants réagiront aux contributions des autres à l'aide d'outils d'écriture créative, de fictionnalisation et de surenchère. &#38;nbsp;
